Tonkeeper Wallet Review
Tonkeeper is the most popular mobile TON wallet (around 70% of active TON holders)
Tonkeeper is the oldest of the non-custodial mobile “version 4” TON wallets, first hitting the app stores in 2021. It is also the most popular, used by an estimated 70% of TON coin holders.
Available in both English and Russian language user interface depending upon phone system language settings, Tonkeeper has an always-on “dark mode”, opposite to Tonhub which is always-on “light mode” and TonSafe with both.
This attractive look has helped attract a younger generation of TON crypto-currency enthusiasts, as well as its unique historic TON vs USD rate graph.
Tonkeeper is always leading with the latest in TON blockchain features implemented in the wallet app, although this results in issues resulting from such experimental integrations, which make it a somewhat unstable wallet app.
Some of these negative results, which result from a willingness to implement such features ahead of others, can also be a positive, in the sense that such features are unavailable in the other non-custodial mobile TON wallets:
NFT display within TonSafe and ability to send NFT from the app
Wallet TON DNS address support
Subscriptions
Wallet version switcher
For those wanting to display NFT directly within the app (Tonhub does not display NFT as yet and TonSafe does it in view mode only) Tonkeeper is thus the only mobile TON wallet that displays NFT on its own tab and which can send NFT.
This experimental feature is however often plagued with issues, such as the NFT tab just “disappears” and so there is no way to see or manipulate NFT without waiting for the next version of Tonkeeper to correct this issue.
Support for TON DNS wallet addresses, has its own risks, highlighted in TonSafe’s FAQ, but again Tonkeeper is the first and only wallet to include this.
Recurring subscriptions have long been implemented in Tonkeeper again as the only wallet to support this, and Tonkeeper is also the only wallet to offer a “version switcher” which is very useful for those wanting to go to older versions.
Use cases are where you have an older “version 3” address and want to be able to access that wallet without migrating your TON coins to the newest contract address version, as offered in TonSafe and Tonhub.
There are TON coin holders who prefer to continue to use a “version 3” wallet smart contract, or to use more than one different account (address), and for this Tonkeeper is ideal. Toncoin wallet offers only version 3, TonSafe and Tonhub v4.
Tonkeeper is however not suited to the business market as yet, since it does not provide much in the way of business functionality, such as Invoices and Refunds, as the new TonSafe which markets itself as the “Professional TON Wallet”.
Also as can be seen in the screen shot advertised on App Store and also within Tonkeeper app itself, there is no importance attached to historic transactions, e.g. the date of past transactions is not shown, only the month and time.
As with the other TON wallets, there is the option to Buy TON. For a long time this was falsely advertised in Tonkeeper as Buy and Sell, which was an annoyance to many who purchased TON via Tonkeeper but then could not sell it.
In its advertising Tonkeeper bills itself as “The only wallet you need” which is of course an exaggeration, and also not true for TON, although this would depend on your use cases, and requirements.
For those who do not need business functions, and are willing to suffer occasional outages of various components which are in experimental stage, but are keen on NFT being able to be manipulated in the wallet, Tonkeeper is for you.
Tonhub is for those who want to earn a small amount of interest on “Staking”, and a wallet with open source code (currently the only other being The Open Network Foundation’s Toncoin wallet which is a version 3 wallet with more basic features).
For those new to TON who want a reliable bug-free experience with lots of user safety features built in, or professionals and businesses, TonSafe would be your best bet, or the original “Toncoin wallet” from the Ton Foundation.
When it comes to support, Tonkeeper provides good support via a Telegram group, while TonSafe offers a Telegram group and a Premium Support service (paid) which we’ve not tested, and Toncoin wallet via TON Foundation’s Help Bot.
