TonSafe TON Wallet Review
We're excited to review this long-awaited TON mobile wallet
A very welcome development in the TON ecosystem: this week a new mobile wallet has been released to the App Store, and weβre pleased to review it.
Before we present our review and why TonSafe is now our favorite mobile TON wallet, letβs look at some background to TON Wallets in general.
As long time readers will know, there are various custodial TON wallets on Telegram (Crypto Bot would be our favorite), and non-custodial wallet apps.
A non-custodial wallet, also known as self-custodial, means that you, and only you have control over, and access to, your account on the blockchain.
Until now there have been 3 popular mobile TON Wallets: Toncoin Wallet, Tonkeeper Wallet, and Tonhub Wallet. Now there is also TonSafe Wallet.
Another recently new wallet is the Juston wallet, and there are others in development. Each of these wallets has advantages and disadvantages.
Safe General and Business Use
TonSafe fills a gap among the non-custodial TON mobile wallets in terms of general and business use, as well as safety being a primary consideration.
This is especially evident from the moment you create a new TON wallet on the blockchain using the TonSafe app, and should you choose to log out.
TonSafe strongly warns about the dangers of losing your 24 βsecret wordsβ after wallet creation, discourages screen shots and tests that you wrote them down correctly. After all, this could later be a disaster, if you did not.
At logout, many are those who would lose access to all their funds, if safety procedures arenβt in place to again remind users to check that they still have their 24 secret words accessible, or are given another chance to record them.
What strikes us immediately after importing an existing wallet with a long transaction history, into TonSafe, is the great thought and attention to detail that went into the design of the transaction history on the main screen.
Clear and Clean Display
TonSafe absolutely blows all four other wallets away with the clean, clear and logical presentation of transactions: we love the color coding for incoming and outgoing transactions, the clear display of messages without needing to open the transactions, and the identification and differentiation of wallets.
TonSafe displays each incoming transaction wallet address in a green circle, outgoing in a red circle, with the last 2 characters in the circle, similar to an avatar. The chances of 2 wallet addresses having the same last two characters are 1 in 4096, so for added security, alongside you can see the last four, which gives the odds of 1 in 16.777 million.
You can easily scroll back to the top with a tap on the balance which remains showing at the top of the screen, and opening a transaction reveals further details, as is common to all the mobile TON Wallets.
Before using TonSafe we advise that you would be well served to check out the βNight Modeβ by enabling it in the Settings tab (gears on the bottom right), as well as selecting one of 25 currencies that you would like balance and send screens to display, so you have an idea of the current TON rate.
Speaking of which, we love the process of sending TON from TonSafe: the confirmation screen is very clear and gives you a chance to review everything before finally committing to send, and even then, you still need your biometrics or pin code, depending on phone setting, to confirm sending.
Advantages of Competing TON Wallets
As is common with all TON non-custodial wallets, sending and receiving between wallets takes around 5 seconds or so, and fees are only the TON blockchain fee, which on The Open Network, is well under 1 cent per transaction, irrespective of how much you are sending!
Having used Toncoin, Tonkeeper and Tonhub mobile wallets extensively on an almost daily basis for up to six months (and Tonhub since its first release earlier this year) as well as Juston more recently, we are in a good position to compare the strengths of each of those against TonSafe.
This is where it is clearly evident that wallets focusing on different strengths and competing for the TON user experience, is of benefit to the community.
For those wanting a reliable, safe, easy to use wallet for receiving, storing and/or sending TON, in general personal use, or for business use, most definitely TonSafe is already the leader in the field.
TonSafe is the only wallet other than Toncoin, to offer easy invoice creation, and the only one to offer an easy refund button on incoming payments. It has the most supported system languages (5) and the most currencies (25).
It is also the only one of the other popular TON wallets to have the facility to view transactions directly in the TonScan blockchain explorer, which also allows viewing of any NFT held by your wallet address, for example.
TonSafe is the only wallet to provide extensive educational and help materials, and not just support (which not even offered by some of the others), which is accessible via its βTonBaseβ tab.
It is the only one to offer both a light (day) and dark (night) mode.
Among all wallets, TonSafe is by far the most international: With 25 currency rates available on display and 5 system languages are supported.
So what does TonSafe not have, that others have?
For one, if NFT is your great interest, you may want to go with Tonkeeper which has the best NFT integration directly within a wallet.
If mining and/or staking is your thing, youβll want to go with Tonhub, which provide these services built in, whilst TonSafe does not.
Interested in subscriptions that are deducted from your wallet on a regular basis? In this case, again Tonkeeper would be your option.
Not too concerned about new user safety and UX but wanting to be able to switch between (or monitor) multiple wallets? Juston is your option.
If these things are not priorities to you, then TonSafe is already your best bet.
Any criticisms or improvement suggestions?
Although we could list a long list of negatives for all the other non-custodial TON Wallets, this review is about TonSafe, and we have a remarkably short wish list of features that we consider missing, or requiring improvement.
One, weβd like to see a privacy feature whereby if you open the wallet after some time, you are prompted for your biometrics again, and for this to be optional. Two, weβd like to see further business features, such as filters, including spam filters, and a data export feature.
A small observation: the βTonBaseβ button looks like a brand, rather than what it actually is, which is an information and support resource. Weβd suggest a name which reflects that could be found as we believe there are many who may be reluctant to tap on it, thinking it is something irrelevant.
Conclusion
If we had to choose just one wallet among the TON mobile non-custodial wallets, it definitely would be TonSafe.
Itβs early days, and surely with more use, there would be more things to highlight regarding TonSafe, but we absolutely have fallen in love with this wallet and we wish it every success in assisting with viral TON adoption.
You can download TonSafe in the App Store β weβre told it will be available very soon also in Play Store. The website for TonSafe is: www.tonsafe.net
